On the Nature of Candle-Flame-Shaped Solar Flares and Sub-Alfvénic Supra-Arcade Plasma Downflows

In The Astrophysical Journal, 2026.

We use a 3D MHD model to study candle-flame-shaped solar flares, comparing Y-point locations with the apparent cusp and showing that observed supra-arcade downflow speeds can underestimate reconnection inflow Alfvén speeds by a factor of ~2–10 due to projection and line-of-sight effects.
